Cafes in Barcelona

Clubs in Barcelona

Macarena
C/Nou de Sant Francesc 5
This is a tiny and friendly club just off Trippy. Entrance is free until fulls up, this is usually around 2 am. Beer is 5 euros, and conctails 8 euros. A funny fact - while there are many girls on early hours, it becomes crowded mosty with guys later.

Shoko
During the day this is a trendy japanese restaurant. The entrances is free and the crow is all tourists and locals who like to meet the tourists.

Catwalk
This is very expensive club near to Shoko, entrance is something around 18 euros and the drinks are extremely expensive too. The place stays open until early morning, so most of the crowd from Shoko moves right here.

Bars in Barcelona

Letitia, C/Codols
This is a lovely bar/lounge with a warm atmosphere and service. The bar is usually not very crowded, gives a good chance to find a place. It is actually quite romantic.

Margarita Blue, C. Josep Anselm Clave
This is an interesting coctail bar. Variety of coctails attracts mostly a young audience. Just off the south end of La Rambla, this is also a tourist-friendly bar with very reasonable prices. They do parties from time to time see agenda at : www.margaritablue.com

Bar Bodega Carlos, Carrer Verdaguer I Callis 4
A cozy bar in El Born, we have been with Tereza for a glass of wine. It's was a bit too much smoky as to my bad cought, but I liked it very much. The cocroach on the wall was no problem for me, I like it organic.

Mariatchi, C/Codols 14
This is an authentic smooky neighbourhood bar of Manu Chao.

Restaurants in Barcelona

We go eat out and we recommend here only the good restautants. Here you will not find any really bad reviews, it is not good to spit the guts because of one bad experience. If your favorite place is not listed here, we most likely haven't been eating there yet.

Mastroque
C/Codols 29
This is a gourmet place. I go here for lunch menu from time to time. It usually costs 9 euros, includes a salat as the started, tiny piece of delicious meet as segundo (second course of the meal), drink and dessert or coffee. What is amazing here, is the San Miquel beer that is of a full taste a goes perfect with your lunch. The portions are small, so don't count this will feed you until dinner.

Bidasoa
C/Serra ?
Family-run authentic cheap catalan restaurant.
- See on the map under number 4

Boga
Carrer Ample 20, tel. 93315014
This is a perfect cafe restaurant where I go for breakfast. They serve sandwiches and pizzas all the day long and menu through the week days.
- See on the map under number 6

These two restaurant was recommended to me when I was buying destilled water in a nearby pharmacy (for my aquarium as ordered by Arnau). The guy in the pharmacy pointed out two great restaurants down Avinyo, one of which was Safra 18 and Boga, he said excellent menu for 8-9 euros. It was maybe my mistake I left the venture going hungry to Safra 18 for the dinner.

Safra 18
Carrer Ample 18, tel. 932687427
Safra 18 Restaurant BarcelonaWhile extremely romantic for a singly guy to watch the couples, I was leaving hungry after having a soup, a piece of chefs specialty called "bull tail" with Moritz beer totals 26 euros. So far was too romantic, and my choice was not worth. For the lunch menu, you can get a similar food for 8-9 euros. This restaurant is certainly a good spot for girl-friends who appreciate its quiet and romantic atmosphere. A standard male companion would leave this restaurant very hungry.

Gay Barcelona

Barcelona has come to be one of the cities of Europe with a relatively high population of homosexual habitants and visitors. There are many bars and clubs for people who are looking for either mixed clientele, only men or only women. In Spain these places are called ”bares de ambiente” and are found in the area called ”Gayeixample” where you also can find gay accommodation. When you travel to Barcelona and want to take in on a gay friendly hotel, apartment or loft, this zone is the place to be. However, in this area of Barcelona everyone even if not he or she is not gay is welcome as long as you are there to have a good time!

Gay and Lesbian Bars:

Ambar. Casanova, 71. Perfect place to go if you like to play pool or just hang out in a sofa or by the bar. There are many pool tables and during the week it is actually free to play in the evening as long as you pay at least one drink. Mixed clientele, free entrance.

Sweet. Casanova, 75. Very nice and fresh bar with a non-smoking policy. The design is modern with a feeling of fashion and style, and the people are around the age of 30. Mixed clientele, free entrance.

Zeltas. Casanova, 75. A bar mainly for men, even if women are more than welcome to enjoy the good music and nice atmosphere of this bar. Since it is a popular place, make sure to be there early if you prefer not being around too much people. Mainly for men, free entrance.

Crazy’s. Consell de Cent, 245. A fabulous little bar with so called ”música pachanguera” which stands for pop that makes you dance even if your feet hurt. A very good place to start the evening, also because they normally have an offer for 2x1 drinks until 00.30. Mixed clientele, free entrance.

Sal i Pebre. Diputaciò 214. A quite small bar with the offer to have two drinks paying just for one. The music is Latin pop and makes you feel in a good mood before you go on to a dance club. Be careful with your belongings and feel free to use the wardrobe at the DJ´s booth. Mixed clientele, free entrance.

Dietrich. Consell de Cent, 255 A very popular bar mainly for men. Don’t miss the show with always something new and impressive forms of improving art and amusement. On Saturdays you normally have to pay entrance fee. Mainly men. www.dietrichcafe.com

Clubs:

Here we dance with whoever whenever

Arena. There are three main clubs called Arena in Barcelona. Nice mixed atmosphere with both gay and straight people. ”Sala Classic” (Diputació, 233) is very popular and quite full if you go there after 02.00. You probably want to go the Classic if you want to be around people around 30 years old. The one called ”Sala Dandy/VIP” (Gran Vía, 593) is the biggest one and has two dance floors with pop and Latin music. The ”Sala Madre” (Balmes, 32) is probably the least crowded of the three, and the people that go here tend to be younger than in the other Arena’s. It also has a dark room for those who look for intimacy. Madre opens also Sunday early evening around 20.00. Entrance: 6€ Friday and 12€ Saturday. (Allows you a drink and entrance to all the three Arena’s). www.arenadisco.com

Here we mainly dance with Women

Aire. C/ Valencia. This is one of the relatively few clubs for only women in Barcelona. This a quite big and open space with a DJ playing cheerful pop music and you can see improvised shows and performances with and by girls. You instantly feel welcome in aire, nobody will judge you for the way you look or dress. Just have fun ! www.arenadisco.com :

D-mer Plató, 15: This is a very popular lesbian club located slightly uptown Barcelona. Take the commuter train to the stop Muntaner and walk uphill for 5 minutes until you reach the street Platò. Keep in mind that the trains stop running around 23.30. D-mer is open until 04.00 so in order to get home you will probably have to take a taxi. Even if this club is not exactly centric, it is a nice change if you have had a slight overdose of the bars and clubs in Eixample.
http://www.d-mer.com

Nextownladys. Manuel Azaña s/n. This is another alternative for only women and is also located a little bit outside the city center. A part from the circle formed dance floor where you can dance to house music, there is a chill out area, and also a terrace outdoors. Take metro green line to Zona Universitaria and then walk to the near by located club called Liquid. It is open from 00.00 to 06.00. The last metro goes at around 02.00 on Fridays and Saturdays. Make sure to look on their web site when the party is organized. www.nextownladys.com

Here we mainly dance with Men

Salvation. Ronda de Sant Pere 19-21. Almost exclusively for men. It is a quite stylish place with two dance floors and a DJ playing modern house music. The mayority of the guests are around 20- 35 years old. This place also has a dark room. Price, around 14€. www.matineegroup.com

Metro. Sepulveda, 185. Almost exclusively for men. The clientele is in all ages and the music is selected in order for a variety of people to like it and dance the night away. For you that want to be away from the rest of all the people can also visit the dark room here. www.metrodiscobcn.com

Getting a bike in Barcelona

Shopping for a bike in Barcelona may become a night mare, especially when you arrive from Amsterdam and you don't like to buy one just robbed from your neigbour. In Barcelona, mountain bikes are particularly popular in the market, but heavy and unconvenient for urban use.

One of the options is to log in to Loquo.com and click the section Bikes for sale. Holland bikes are in demand, so be ready to pay double that much than in Amsterdam for a second-hand (but not stolen!) bike. Serious craps easily come to 150 Euro, so here are some options to get yet a new bike for the same price. I decided to explore the bike shops.

  • Pro-Bike
  • Decathlon
  • Bicycletas I (shop near Ample)
  • Bicycletas II (shop near Avinyo)
  • Bicycletas III (shop near Arc de Truimph)
  • Bicycletas IV (close to Arc de Truimph)
  • Drop a bike, C/Roca
  • Espaibici, C/Bruc 63, quarter of Eixample

Bike Barcelona

She is elegant, violet and beautiful. Abandoned and mistreated to loose on colors, she meets someone to take care of her with love and respect.

On 4 March 2006 Ondrej gets enganged.

Bike rental shops
The best place to rent a bike is Bike Rental Barcelona, a small shop just off Plaza Real. They offer a variety of fashionable foldable bikes, and great service.

Food shops

Supermarkets in Barcelona

If you prefer to cook yourself, may happen you seek for something special apart from the choice in of the local supermarket.

Asian food shops in Barcelona

There are few shops where you can buy a variety of exotic foods. Compared to many international harbour cities, shopping for a common asian product in Barcelona seems to be more complicated.

Supermarket Extremo Oriente
Balmes 6, 8007 Barcelona
This one has particularly a good choice of noodles, chillies and curries, but is not cheap. Ondrej's favorite is thai soup Tom Kha by Thai pride. Apart from the can you need 250g of poultry, extra coconut milk is optional.

Asian food shopYang Kuang
Paseo de San Juan 12 (above the Arc de Triumph)
So far the best asian supermarket I visited in Barcelona, and cheaper than Extremo Oriente. Has wide selection of noodles and I even found the hot-pot soup here.

Labuguen-Hidalgo Super Store Asia Food
C/Tallers 77, C/Joaqin Costa 32

Barcelona beer guide

Some basic points: there are many kind of beers and what we focus here most of the light beers that you can get in local bars, but also those special you can get in the local shops. Let's start with the most common beer to be served in Barcelona, Estrella, that means a star.

  • Moritz
  • Estrella

This beer is brewed locally in Damm brewery and it's slogal is a "Pilsner beer to share" is comes in economic 1 liter bottles. Is a lager with a malt flavour and a hop taste.
  • Other product of Damm brewery include Damm bier, Voll Damm, Bock Damm, Ak Damm, Damm Lemon.
  • Mahou

Favorite brands that you can find in the local supermarkets:

Barcelona romantic

For girls, getting romantic is just as important as getting a beer for Ondrej. Here are some good tips where to take your girlfriend. Please don't blame if you still won't get lucky.

Boating in Ciutadella park
Parc de la Ciutadella
Park de la Ciutadella
This is a lovely park, yet pending a little in the reconstruction (as of early 2006). Anyways, there is a ZOO located in the park, so maybe a great place for kids and smokers.
